Get Out of Your Own Way.
Oct 14th, 2020
Have you ever considered that it might not be your circumstance or other people getting in the way of your success? That the obstacle you have to climb over is yourself?
‘Get out of your own way’ is something my spouse has been telling me for over a decade. He’s so wise and for the longest time, I didn’t know what he was trying to say. But someone says something to you often enough and you experience pain and suffering long enough, you begin to understand!
Fifteen years ago, the biggest obstacle between me and the life I’m living now was myself. My mindset. The limiting beliefs I thought were true. My cruel self-talk and harsh punishment when I missed the mark. My unrelenting, strict rules and routines that gave me a false sense of control over my life.
A couple of times a year when life got really hard or I was feeling REALLY burnt out or frustrated with life, I’d throw up my hands and ask:
‘Why can’t I…do this or that, be happy, find my purpose, have peace, feel free? Why do I feel so stuck?’
His answer was always the same.
Get Out of Your Own Way.
Boom! Every time. It landed like a rock on my heart. Such simple truth. Love is telling someone what they NEED to hear, not what they want to.
Ouch. Right. Yes. That again. Okay. I’ll ‘try’. Easier said than done. Fast forward 15 years and I’d like to say I’m out of my own way. But I’m not. After all, we don’t live in a petri dish. We’re human beings having a human experience. Of course, I’m still prone to moments of self-doubt, sabotage, negative self-talk, and self-defeating behaviors. But now, it’s a moment rather than my state of being. Progress. Isn’t that what we’re after?
And now I’m here. Giving you permission. To do the thing, whatever that thing happens to be. Stop waiting. Wondering. Avoiding. Hiding.
Get out of your own way.
